GENERAL
TIPS:
The job your professional piercer has done for you must be continued by you. Take
care of your piercing, and it will heal beautifully. Remember, just because you
got pierced at a reputable shop under sterile conditions, does not mean it heals
perfectly on its own! So, in general, some basic things to remember, then follow
healing instructions for each individual piercing below.
New piercings should be cleaned 2 or 3 times daily, especially during the first
to third weeks. In this period of time it is essential that you follow proper
instructions and do not substitute any cleanser or other specifically recommended
solution to use on your new piercing! Under no circumstances should you try to
move your jewelry UNTIL you have cleaned it as well as the piercing itself. If
you introduce any of the crust that forms naturally on the outside of the piercing
INTO the body, you can easily get an infection. Clean-first, wiggle-second! After
the piercing has been cleaned, make sure it is lightly patted dry with a clean
tissue and for the first week apply a tiny bit of Neosporin or Bacitracin to the
jewelry at the piercing holes. After your body gets used to its new addition,
you don't need to use the Bacitracin or Neosporin, and we recommend you discontinue
use of it just because of it's sticky nature and tendency to catch foreign objects
(dust, pollen, etc.). The best way to heal a new piercing once it's gone past
that first crucial period of about a week is to keep it cleansed and dry. This
obviously doesn't apply to the piercing of the tongue! Oral contact with new piercings
CAN cause infections. Having a new genital piercing does not prohibit sexual activity,
but it is strongly recommended to use a condom to minimize infection risk. New
piercings, however (in any spot) should not be subjected to heavy acrobatics,
stretching, pulling, etc..
UPPER BODY PIERCINGS
Ears, Eyebrows, Nostrils, Septum: Clean piercing & jewelry 2-3x daily with
Bactine - use a q-tip.
Labret, Lips, Tongue : These piercings tend to swell up; sometimes up to 3 days
after initial piercing. Rinse mouth AT LEAST every 3 hours with Listerine. Suck
on ice to keep the swelling down. Use Gly-Oxide on both sides of the piercing,
several times a day.
MID & LOWER BODY PIERCINGS
Navel, Nipples, Female & Male Genital Piercings: Clean at least twice a day
with an antibacterial soap. Remember to wash your hands with the soap FIRST, so
they are clean before washing your piercing! Gently scrub jewelry and piercing
until all crust is dissolved. At this point you should try to move the jewelry
back and forth carefully and just a little bit so the soap will clean inside the
piercing as well. Make sure you rinse the soap off thoroughly when finished.
HEALING TIME
Each person is different, as is each piercing. These are approximate healing times,
just to give you an idea what you are in for in terms of having a new piercing.
Jewelry SHOULD NOT be changed while the piercing is in its healing stages, although
there will be a large difference from initial piercing to the end of the healing
process in terms of discomfort and appearance.
